TOE / HEEL LINE – (pg. 127)

1.     Method of determining the proper width of a NEUTRAL BOW AND ARROW STANCE, where the toe of the forward foot is in line with the heel of the rear foot.

IDEAL PHASE – (pg 66)

1.     This is PHASE 1 of the analytical process of dissecting a technique.  It requires structuring an IDEAL technique by selecting a combat situation that you wish to analyze.  Contained within the technique should be fixed moves of defense, offense, and the anticipated reactions that can stem from them.  This PHASE strongly urges the need to analyze techniques from THREE POINTS OF VIEW.  Refer to THREE POINTS OF VIEW, as well as FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD POINT OF VIEW.

As mental attitudes improve so does confidence.  (The Zen of Kenpo, pg 6)

Slow moves develop good habits.  (The Zen of Kenpo, pg 63)

In the SKK Dojo –

Okay, November brought us five new students.  We need to acknowledge and congratulate our newest yellow belts:

Elizabeth Cotillo

Ethan Harwell

Gordon Wysingle

As an added bonus, Ethan, has joined the adult class and is becoming an excellent student in the adult class.

The children class is going very strong.  I would really appreciate it if your little monster/s are prepared before I tell them to line up, i.e. potty, uniform on, belt tied, no jewelry.  SKK would like to suggest you have bottled water instead of using the facility drinking fountain.  Students, please be kind to your fellow classmates.  Please, remind your student/s to ask for a stripe once a week.

Our adult class is becoming pretty awesome.  We have a melting pot of kenpo styles.  The adults we have are very bright, and bring a lot of personality to our class.  Thank you and keep up the excellent work.  A loud shout out to the adults that show up early and help me out in the children class, thank you…!!!!

SACRAMENTO KENPO KARATE NEWS & UPDATES

October 4, 2012

Wow!  How time flies.  Sorry about the last couple of months.  Life got busy, and when you elect to postpone certain things, it seems they can easily be forgotten…hhhmmmmm.

October 8th is Columbus Day

October 31 is Halloween.  (PLEASE BE ALERT AND STAY SAFE!)

WIDE KNEEL STANCE – (pg. 139)

1.     This stancecan stem from a NEUTRAL BOW AND ARROW STANCE by dropping the rear knee (about the length of your hand from the ground), and forcing it out.  Your weight, at this point, should be evenly distributed (50-50).  The drop in height can increase your stability, add power, help to avoid an attack, allow greater access to lower targets, and can be effectively used as a pin or check. The WIDE and CLOSE KNEEL STANCES obtain their names because of the differences in width, not in depth, that exist between them.

CLOSE KNEEL STANCE –  (pg 27)

1.     Similar to a neutral bow stance, with the exception that the rear knee is dropped two inches from the ground.  The rear knee is kept in as well as close to the forward leg.  The weight of the body is equally divided on both legs The WIDE and CLOSE KNEEL STANCES obtain their names because of the differences in width, not in depth, that exist between them.

The three stages of obtaining comprehensive knowledge are:

1.     Embryonic basics

2.     Complexity

3.     Sophisticated simplicity

(The Zen of Kenpo, pg 60)

Knowledge can supercede strength when that knowledge is properly applied. (The Zen of Kenpo, pg 60)

SKK Monthly Update –

Wow!  Our children / beginner class is holding steady at around 12 to 18 students.  Parents and students, please make sure that homework comes first.  Parents, I appreciate your patience when it comes to your child and learning SKK's curriculum.  I know it is a lot and I do love teaching the little monsters…Ahem!

Make sure that you introduce yourselves to the new students.

We have some new additions to our class.  Make sure you introduce yourselves to Fred Chavez (1st degree black), Jared (1st degree black) and Julie Durfee.  Our class has seen a surge in attendance which is very nice to see.  It is especially nice to have students come back after a hiatus.  A special thanks to Jens, Fred, James, Jessica and Eugene in helping with the children / beginner class.  In case you are wondering, yes teaching is part of the curriculum for the adult students.

PATTERN ADDICT – One who is caught up in traditionally prescribed movements.  (Ed Parker's Encyclopedia of Kenpo pg 90)

SKK Monthly Update –

The children class is currently moving along well. Matthew and Joshua continue to show us excellent examples of how students are to behave in class. We have some new students who have joined us for the month of June please say hi to them if you have not already. Oh my gosh!!! We are up to around 26 children in our class. I thank everyone for their patience and understanding. I would love to be able to work with everyone of them on an individual basis, but that is not to be. Thank you for your support.

The adult class is as fun as always. Again, those adults that show up early and help with the children class, thank you. Your help is greatly appreciated. Our adult class is becoming more entertaining and lively. We have some more adult females who are becoming quite deadly in their endeavors. Watch out everyone.

Our Wednesday "advanced" training/practice session has become an issue lately. Please note it is specifically for Brown belts and higher. Those individuals that are interested in showing up on Wednesdays need to be at least Orange belt and it will be a case by case assessment.

Below are general rank/promotion outlines. Obviously, these estimates will vary according to individuals…
  • Yellow Belt   This level introduces you to the fundamentals and will help you achieve better physical conditioning. Sparring is introduced at this level for the purpose of condition. It takes the average person about three to five months to earn a Yellow Belt.
  • Orange Belt   You begin to create speed and power in your kicks and punches. You learn to block and counter-punch with amazing effectiveness. It takes about five to seven months to earn a Orange Belt.
  • Purple Belt   At this level you begin to learn free-style sparring. You will notice that your confidence has increased by this time. You are now well on your way to Black Belt. The Purple Belt is reached from about seven to twelve months from beginning Martial Arts.
  • Blue Belt   At this belt level you begin to feel comfortable with free-sparring. Your skills will be sharpened from intermediate to an advanced level of training. Blue Belt is reached after about one and a half years of training.
  • Green Belt   Your posture and body stances will express your new-found confidence. In fact, both you hands and feet will become effective weapons. It takes about 24 months of training to earn a Green Belt.
  • Brown Belt   As a Brown Belt your emotional and mental outlook is deepened and you become even more confident. You develop expertise in the Martial Arts. The average duration to Brown Belt is three years.

CONTROL –

  1. The regulation of force to produce (a) accuracy as well as (b) the degree of injury. For example, a punch that strikes a specific target without injuring it requires control. Control may or may not involve touching your target. It takes even greater CONTROL to avoid injuring a person who is constantly moving.
  2. The ability (a) to prevent or curtail your opponent's actions, or (b) to guide your opponent wherever, however, and whenever. Checks are types of controls. They are good examples of how one can temporarily prevent or curtail an opponent from taking action. (Ed Parker's Encyclopedia of Kenpo, pg 33)

Mind , breath, and strength must culminate simultaneously, if you plan to maximize power.

(The Zen of Kenpo, pg 91)

Self-defense techniques are expansions of Katas or Forms. (The Zen of Kenpo, pg 117)
