A Great Place to Learn Kenpo - Kenpo Orphans Welcome!

Sacramento Kenpo Karate is a very warm and friendly school teaching the art of self-defense. It's a great place for women to feel safe and for men to smack the heck out of each other, if that's what they want. The men can feel safe too. :)

Sacramento Kenpo Karate

 Thanksgiving is Over!
Now on to Christmas!
Time Flies when you are having fun!
KENPO 101 –
Borrowed Force - An opponent's force which is used to defeat him. This can be accomplished by going with the opponent's force or, upon occasion, going against his force. The concept allows your opponent's force to enhance the effectiveness of your action.
Borrowed Reach - You can have Borrowed Reach without Borrowed Force, but not the other way around. Use Borrowed Reach to get Borrowed Force. A kick to the groin, gives you Borrowed Reach (bends attacker over and gets them closer to us) but we don't get Borrowed Force until you follow the kick with a strike.

Graham Lelliott's Kenpo Camp May 2011

Not only did I receive it, I'm posting for all to see.  This is a terrific camp with some of the warmest people I've ever encountered.  We will absolutely be there if finances allow.  Well worth the money.

Hi Amy,

Just letting everyone know that we will be doing the camp Wonder Valley again next year in May 2011.

It would be great to see you and if you can pass the word around i would be very grateful. I am sending you an attachment of a poster that you could possibly use to advertise the event at your Dojo.

Also if you click on the website www.glkenpo.com there is information on the event, but you will need to register an interest via the Jot-form on the site. This does not lock you into any financial obligations until such time as we will require a deposit. Im sure you can appreciate that the room space is limited, so an earlier response would help my wife Jaydean tremendously. The Jot-form will go directly to her from this link and she will correspond with you.

I would appreciate that you would send myself a reply acknowledging that you have received this email at glkenpo@hotmail.com .

Take care and be safe.

Graham

Kenpo Terminology 101

Circular Movements - Moves that predominantly loop or follow a curve. Such moves can be used defensively or offensively.

Kiai - A loud noise cause by the rapid expulsion of air from the diaphragm of the body. This expulsion of air creates stability, increases force, fortifies the body and can have a psychological effect upon your opponent. Kiai originally meant "breathing exercise".

SKK NEWS

Hello all!

I apologize for the lateness for this months posting.

Well, our children' class is just amazing. Tyler '1' is very diligent and very solid in his work. Alex is the big brother and the strength both spiritually and physically in class. James is great with his happy spirit and continued growth in the arts. Matthew has boundless energy and a very positive attitude that is always present. Nehemiah continues to strive and grow with his knowledge of Kenpo. Our newest member, Tyler '2', is very enthusiastic and another fast learner. Kiaaaii!!! Kudos to our children's class. Keep up the excellent work, guys!

Sad to say, our adult class has diminished as of late.  Thanks to Eugene, Ron, Jeff, and Bryan for the consistent attendance.  We continue to modify, upgrade, and adapt basic principles thanks to Dr. Dave Crouch. SKK technique application is continuously gaining in power, speed, and efficiency.

I know that life hits than we do (sometimes) and things come up, so if and when time permits, please come by our school and grace us with your presence. We miss you all, and you know who you are…

Sacramento Martial Arts

Angle of No Return - Refers to the position and angle of the upper body and hips while delivering a front kick or forward motion, making it awkward, difficult, and illogical to attempt to return to your starting position. Because of the awkwardness and the time needed to return to your original position, exposure of your vital areas would work in your opponent's favor--not to mention your inability to render an immediate counter.

Forms – Is literally a short story of motion. It consists of basic movements of offense and defense incorporated into a dance-like routine for purposes of exercising, training without a partner, or training at home. It is an index of offensive and defensive maneuvers whereby one can get answers to certain situations. It is a physical expression of form, speed, power, continuity, poise, grace, timing, and knowledge.

SKK NEWS

Happy April everyone!

The children's class is really fun to teach. Travis, Tyler, Alex, James, and Nehemiah are fast becoming young kenpo practitioners. I find it very satisfying to teach to these students. They are very good listeners and they "want" to be in class, that is very refreshing to see that kind of attitude in class. We just picked up a new student and his name is Matthew, please say hi to him.

Our adult class continues to excel on all levels. Bryan and Eugene are hard at working on their form and technique. Gary and Michael are discovering new things the green belt has to offer, and loving them. Johnny has come back after a long hiatus. Ronald continues in his effort to become more relaxed and it is showing, good job Ron.

I know that life hits more than we do (sometimes) and things come up, so if and when time permits, please come by our school and grace us with your presence. We miss you all, and you know who you are…

Mechanical Stage - Is that stage of learning where movements are clarified and defined thus, giving them meaning and purpose. Movements at this stage, however, are applied mechanically and a student is more equipped to verbalize answers than to physically utilize them.

Weight Distribution - The apportionment of weight related to a particular stance. It may vary, fifty-fifty, sixty-forty, ninety-ten, etc.

Body Alignment

This involves the placing of angles into perspective. It is the coordination of body parts in order to harmonize the angles at which they travel. All parts of the body are aligned to travel in one direction. This principle, when followed, automatically triggers the principle of back-up-mass where body weight enhances your action.

Inward Parry
A blocking method (usually with an open hand) that requires your blocking arm to travel from outside in as it redirects a blow or kick by riding or going with the force.

Sacramento Martial Arts

Power--is the culmination of several principles--the sum total of which maximizes the expenditure of energy. It is the magnification of force aided by concentrated focus. Its capacity is proportionate to the physical strength, force, or energy exerted, in additions to the speed it is rendered.

Parrying Block--blocking moves that redirect, ride and go with the force of your opponent's action.

Check--to restrain, hinder, or repress an opponent from taking action. This is accomplished by pressing, pinning, or hugging an opponent usually at the joints so that it minimizes his leverage and nullifies his actions. SKK 2009 YEAR IN REVIEW

Wow! 2009 was an exciting and very fast paced year.
We got to see our children’s class grow at an alarming rate at the beginning of the year. Then summer came and just as easy as they came in, they all left. Our adult class always remained pretty steady with attendance.

We had a couple of great seminars put on by Dr. Dave Crouch (5th degree). Thanks to Dr. Dave’s cool concepts we have been able to take our techniques up a few notches. Tara, Amy and I went to a few seminars / camps to represent SKK.

In October / November Sensei Tara Turnbull, one half of the original founding members of SKK, decided to leave teaching at SKK for personal reasons. We all wish her luck and hope she does not become a stranger to our school. We miss you Tara!

SKK NEWS Now that it is a New Year. Let’s start if off right. We hope to have "everyone" come back.

Keep checking out the SKK web site calendar function to see about class schedules and upcoming events. Plus, let us know if you have an announcement or information of your own to pass on, we will be more than happy to put it up.
Please let us know if you are unable to show up to class. Below is our contact information… Ron Nakamoto - Cell 916-832-2882 Ronnak4967@gmail.com or rnakamoto@chw.edu
