A Great Place to Learn Kenpo - Kenpo Orphans Welcome!

Sacramento Kenpo Karate is a very warm and friendly school teaching the art of self-defense. It's a great place for women to feel safe and for men to smack the heck out of each other, if that's what they want. The men can feel safe too. :)

Palindrome video

This is too brilliant not to share.

A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward. This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward.  Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite.

This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and it is brilliant.   Make sure you read as well as listen…forward and backward.

This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20-year old.   The contest was titled "u @ 50"  by  AARP. This video won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause.  So simple and yet so brilliant. Take a minute and watch it.

Kenpo Karate

Happy Holidays from SKK!!

KENPO TERMINOLOGY 101 -
Angle of No Return--refers to the position and angle of the upper-body and hips while delivering a front kick or forward motion, making it awkward, difficult, and illogical to attempt to return to your starting position. Because of the awkwardness and the time needed to return to your original position, exposure of your vital areas would work in your opponent's favor--not to mention your inability to render an immediate counter. SKK NEWS Whew! Okay! Made it through Thanksgiving, and more importantly I found out that I do not want to go out on 'Black Friday' ever again. Amy and I tried. We got up to get to Target by 6:30 am and got nothing. The lesson learned is to avoid the crowds and sleep in.

Wow!!!! Hello everyone!!! Is everybody ready for Thanksgiving? It seems we are still recovering from Halloween. Sheesh!! Can you believe that we have less than 40 shopping days till Christmas?

Okay! Okay! Two months ago I stated how small our children’s class had become, well, that is no longer the case. Tyler, Andrew, and Daeton have recently joined our kids class. Travis, Omari and Alex I would like to thank you guys for helping me in the children’s class. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Jordan is back with us after taking a personal leave of absence. Mackenzie, Jon and Skyler continue to wow us with their skills. I am very happy to see the wonderful group of kids we have now. Everyone keep up the positive attitudes.

Our adult class continues to grow. We would like to welcome Sonny, Ron and Zach to our humble school. They are very eager to learn and we are just as excited to have them. Gary, the newlywed of our group, is finally back from his honeymoon. After a year hiatus it is good to have Eugene back. Shane and Shannon have been M.I.A. (Missing in Action) lately. I believe Shane has been caught up in the strife of moving and Shannon has been very ill. We hope to see you guys soon, we miss your smiley happy faces. Keith is going strong and learning at a phenomenal rate. Greg and Jeff continue to discover new things about Kenpo. Michael is really moving along with his skills. Bryan continues to be instrumental in helping us teach the adults. Robert and Erick, hopefully we will see you two sooner than later and hope everything is going well. Sure is good to see everyone out and enthusiastic about kenpo.

Sacramento Martial Arts

Happy Halloween Everyone!!

KENPO TERMINOLOGY 101 -
Opposites and Reverses
Delayed Sword and Sword of Destruction are the same technique using opposite hand sides. Techniques can be run on both left and right sides as well as inside and outside (leaping crane run right side against a left or right punch). It's not necessary to run them on both sides because Mr. Parker devised the techniques so that for every left side defense there is a matching technique on the right side and vice versa with the assumption that the right side is the power side.

SKK NEWS

Whew!! The year is still going by to fast.

We at SKK are very sad to announce the early retirement of Mrs. Tara Turnbull, 1st Degree black. She has thought it over and decided that her personal / family life is getting just way to busy and it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain her teaching schedule. So if you can please let Sensei Turnbull know that she will be missed and wish her luck. Remember, there aren’t any ‘Good byes’ just ‘Til next time’.

Our children/beginners class has picked up a new student. His name is Skyler. He is a very talented young man. Travis and Omari continue their studies and are always happy to help us out. Travis, I want to thank you for your extra effort helping out. Jon and Alex have been really working hard and it definitely shows. Mackenzie, is picking up her game to meet the challenge of being the only girl in class. Watch out boys she does not mess around.
Oh and make sure you work memorizing the Kenpo Creed… Okay!

Keep up the good work in class, children!

The adult class has signed up Keith. He is new to martial arts in general, please introduce yourself if you have not. Overall classes have been pretty steady. We would like to thank Bryan Parker, 2nd Brown, for all of the teaching he has been doing lately. For those of you who do not know, when you attain brown belt status, teaching is part of the curriculum to getting your black belt. Shannon and Shane continue to make improvements. It is really good to see Lisa showing up on a regular basis. Jeff is practically a kenpo fixture in our classes and that is a good thing, he is showing really good improvement.

Those of you who have not shown up lately, and ‘You know who you are’. Please, let us know what is going on with your schedule. Also, know that you are missed. We are getting tired of beating up the same people every week. Come by and say hello, even if you cannot work out.

Thanks to Dr. Dave Crouch, 5th Dan for coming out and giving us an impromptu class on knife fighting tactics. As always his teachings are a value to us and we always appreciate what he has to offer our humble class. Thank you Dr. Dave.

Special announcement keep your calendars as open as possible in December, as we may have Master Lee Wedlake out at our humble class to give us some awesome instruction.

As a reminder, please have your dues paid to Cordova Recreation and Park District by the 10th of every month. Thank you.

Sacramento Kenpo Karate

Here are a couple of pictures from my trip to Maryland.  This is the class I visited when I was visiting my dear friend Camey.

Oh, and something that Ron failed to mention in his most recent post was that he was promoted to 4th degree last week!  He was surprised, humbled and completely thrilled.

We, of course, were and are very proud of him.  He's doing a really great job.

Back-Up-Mass - The use of body weight that is directly behind the action that is taking place. For example, (1) a punch delivered when the elbow is directly behind the fist, or (2) the bracing of one finger directly behind the other when delivering a two finger chop to the throat, etc. Back-Up Mass is greatly enhanced when proper body alignment is achieved. Body alignment gets mass into proper perspective and allows the body to take full advantage of channeling weight and energy while traveling in the same direction (directional harmony)

SKK NEWS Wow!!!! Hello everyone!!! It is the time of the year for the California State Fair and back to school. Another sign of how fast time flies by, especially for those of us having so much fun doing Kenpo.

Please remember to check out the SKK web site calendar function to see about class schedules and upcoming events. Plus, let me know if you have an announcement or information of your own to pass on, I will be more than happy to put it up. Contact me at rnakamoto@chw.edu or ronnak4967@gmail.com.

Children’s class has really gotten down to the bare minimum of 3 or 4 students, lately. Travis and Alyssa are now Orange belts, congratulations and keep up the work you 2. Omari has been working really hard and it really shows. We are proud of you Omari. McKenzie is starting to add those tips on her belt, ‘Way to go!!!’ Jon is another beginner who is starting to add more color to his white belt too. ‘Yay!!! Jon!.’

Adult class has picked up some newcomers. Shannon and Shane are new to our class and martial arts, make sure you give them your hellos if you have not yet. Eric is a returnee to Kenpo after a long absence or can you say ‘I have a life’? It was good seeing Lisa the other night.

*****Just so everyone knows, it is good to see you all period. We love to teach and we could not ask for a better bunch of students then what we have now.*****

Quote - “I do not love the bright sword for it's sharpness, nor the arrow for it's swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend” -- J.R.R. Tolkien
Wow! Can you believe that we are already more than halfway through the year? Before you know it, it will be Christmas time, can you say Whoa!
Do not forget to visit the Sacramento Kenpo Karate web-site to check out the new calendar feature.  It'll tell you when classes are and when any special events occur.  The 4th of July is coming up fast folks. I would like to extend our thanks to all of our students for showing the dedication and perseverance.
Our children’s class has gotten smaller as of late. S.K.K. would like to welcome Jon and Jonathan both are showing tremendous enthusiasm in our children’s class. Alyssa is moving along really well, she is one of the best students we have.Omari has been showing great promise and leadership abilities.
A reminder to all of the parents and all the adults, we have been directed by Cordova Parks and Recreation to make sure that the monthly tuition is paid for by the 10th of every month.
Thank you to all those wonderful parents who have also made the commitment to make sure their child/children show up neat, clean and ready to go for 6:30 pm class. We like to see clean gis and clipped fingernails.
The adult class has been a blast lately. Please take your time out to introduce yourself to Shannon and Jason, both are starting out fresh, although Jason has a brown belt in another style.  Gary works with Shannon and Jason is a good friend of Aron's. We would also like to introduce Erick, a first degree brown under Arnie Inouye from a long time ago.  We are glad to see Thomas's triumphant return and look forward to having both Eugene and Robert come back.  "Robert, Robert! -- Where ARE you??"
Welcome to all of the new people who have started up and thank you, it is and will be an honor and a pleasure to work with you all.
Tara is coming back from vacation in Alaska. Amy and Ron will be going on vacation from July 11th to July 26th. We already have Bryan, Erick, Thomas, and Gary lined up to help Tara with the children’s class. If any other adult students are available, I encourage you to come earlier and help teach in the children’s class.  Teaching is the best way to improve your knowledge and understanding of the art.  Thank you to those who decide to help out.
Have a happy, safe, and sane Fourth of July.

Sacramento Kenpo Karate

Greetings and Salutations,
Boy-o-boy! Time flies when good times and fun abound at SKK. Especially, since we now have a thriving kids class and a kick-butt adult class.

Congratulations and praise to Bryan Parker, on Tuesday May 19, 2009 he was promoted to second degree brown. You should have seen the surprise on his face. He deserves it because of his dedication in showing up and working hard, especially the stuff that needs work. (And still does heheheh). More to come, so be ready pal…

On May 13th we at SKK were again blessed and honored to have Dr. Dave Crouch, 5th Degree American Kenpo practitioner and instructor give us a 2+ hour seminar. We were exposed to some very eye opening concepts in the world of American Kenpo techniques. So all of us at SKK as well as our other guests that showed up, we would like to extend our thanks to you Dr. Dave for taking time out of your busy schedule and coming out to show us what moving in Kenpo should really be.

A quick list of what is happening with our awesome dragons and tigers students:
Jadon is nearly ready for 4th stripe for all techniques and working on polishing them up now. Yayyy!!! Jadon, way to hang in there.

Travis is moving through Orange Dragon quickly and only needs his sparring stripe and basics stripe. Keep up the good work on everything you are working on.

Congratulations! Omari for being promoted to Jr. Dragon Yellow belt on April 9, 2009. He is currently working towards his 1st stripe on Orange Dragon.

Congratulations to JD for being promoted to Jr. Dragon Yellow belt. He is currently working for his first stripe. JD will be taking a break from us after this month.

Congratulations! Carlos for being promoted to Jr. Dragon Yellow belt on April 9, 2009. He is currently working towards his 2nd stripe now. Keep up the hard work Carlos.

Ruby now has a stripe for 1st three techniques and has just earned another stripe for reciting the Kenpo Creed.
Both Carlos and Ruby will be spending the rest of the month of May with us, and then they are taking a break for summer vacation.

So if anyone of boys and girls get a chance make sure to let Carlos, Ruby and JD how much we will miss them. Okay…
Alyssa just earned her 4th stripe for Personal Safety information. Alyssa, you have two more to go before Purple Tiger test. Keep up the good work especially in sparring. You are the most motivated one there.
Joseph is working towards his second stripe on white belt and has his 1st stripe for first 3 techniques.

Kudos to Jordan he got his last stripe on his belt and is eligible to test for Yellow Tiger soon.
Victor is working towards his 1st stripe on Yellow Dragon.
Akoni has recently earned 2nd stripe for Blocking Set #1 and already has a stripe for 1st three techs. Keep up the amazing work and we are impressed with how well you listen.

Joe'Vaughn Did you guys give him a stripe?? If not, he should earn one soon- he's working towards his first according to his card.

Hurray for Marilyn you are very good listener and you are showing very good martial skills. You are on your way to earning your first stripe.

Sierra- Has two stripes- Safety Info/Pledge and Blocking Set #1. According to her card, she knows the first 3 techs so should be working towards that stripe.

Mackenzie will soon be earning second stripe for either Safety Info/Pledge or Blocking Set #1. She has one other stripe for her first 3 techniques.

Atta-boy Darian you are very sharp and a good listener and I are impressed with your skills, keep up the work. You have definitely earned a stripe young man.

I would like everyone to say hi to Jon Stewart our newest student. He is working towards his first stripe. Keep up the enthusiasm Jon.

Our adult class has now been graced with Lisa and Gary, a couple more Kenpo orphans. So if you have not already introduced yourself please do. We are also fortunate to have Richard Nakamoto, a 4th Degree, show up and give his technical expertise.
Wish Amy and Ron good-luck as they head out to Graham Lelliott’s Fresno Camp this Memorial Day holiday.
Keep your eyes and ears open for upcoming events and seminars. We will keep you posted, as information becomes available.
For those of you who have taken a short hiatus we want you to know that your presence is missed and that you are more than welcome to come back through our doors so that good times can be had in the world of Kenpo Karate
See you soon…

Kenpo Karate

APRIL SKK NEWS
Hello all,

Can you say, KABOOM! Wow! Our children’s class has grown now to twenty plus children. Needless to say the children’s class is really taking off. We have seen some rising new stars. We have seen some wonderful, bright, shiny personalities blossom during the past few weeks. It is truly a blessing to be able to teach such wonderful children. J.D. and his buddy Carlos are doing really well especially with helping their instructors and managing the smaller children. Omari is becoming a very solid young man and it is always a thrill to watch him work. Travis is moving along learning Kicking Set 1. Sierra is growing more confident by the class, soon her little sister will be joining us. Alyssa is a little dynamo and always impressing us.

To the parents out there we would like to extend our thanks. Without your help we would not have the children class that we now have. Thank you for working out with them and making sure they are getting their curriculum.

In our adult class, we are still working on the BAM! and WHAP! Of the orange belt techniques. For those of you who have been unable to attend and get the new better upgraded material do not worry. We are always working on our techniques. Of course, everyone will always be working on those forms and sets.

Chris and Robert have come back from a long hiatus. Johnny is currently finished with night school and has also come back. We are happy to introduce Gary into our family of orphaned kenpoists, so if you get a chance go and introduce yourself. Alicia and Rashelle have each earned a stripe for getting their yellow belt techniques.

It has come to our attention that we are not sparring enough, if at all. So in the near future if you have sparring gear do not hesitate to put them into your gear bag. We will start to have sparring sessions in the near future. Can’t wait, should be a blast, to do some sparring. It is really fun and talk about an aerobic workout, Whew! Bring out the oxygen! Hahaha…

Adult students! Especially upper belt, we need your help! On Thursday April 23rd Instructor Tara will be alone in teaching the enormous and always entertaining children class. If you could be so kind and let us (Amy, Tara, and Ron) know if you can come and help teach the children, that would be most appreciated.

For those that are interested, there is a tournament on April 11th, 2009 the Capital City Classic at Inderkum High School 2500 New Market drive, Sacramento, for more information visit http://www.gska.net/.
Several seminars and camps are on the horizon so keep your eyes and ears and most importantly your schedules open for dates and times.

Kenpo Karate

Hi All,
A few things going on at our school.  First of all, we have at on of new kids joining our class and they're doing a great job.  We love teaching the kids.  It's great to see some come out of their shells, like Sierra, and others start to get greater leadership abilities, like Amari.
In the adult class, we've been working on increasing the effectiveness of our orange belt techniques, specifically, that I've been working on with my instructor.
Ron has been a great asset to the school and we always enjoy when his brother Rich (a fourth degree black belt) is able to attend as well.  Aron also is able to come at least once a week and he has a wonderful perspective (and really long legs.)
Michael has joined us and Greg, recently promoted to yellow belt,  has continued and both are a lot of fun to have in class.  Chad and his brother Kirk have made it to yellow and are working hard on their kenpo.
We have two new students, Alicia and Rachelle, who just got their uniforms and are doing great.  It's nice to have some female students back in class.
Bryan is doing a great job on his twist stances and we look forward to promoting him to second brown in the near future.
We also look forward to having Eugene come back to class, once work allows for it, as well as having Robert re-join us when his wrist heals.  (We didn't do it!)
I had another great lesson with Dave Crouch, my instructor, and we look forward to having him come up our way again in the near future.  I always learn a ton from Dr. Dave.
Ron and I plan to attend the Wonder Valley Camp in May, hosted by Graham Lelliott.  It's going to be a fabulous kenpo weekend. (www.glkenpo.com)
Oh, and Lee Wedlake has a new book out called 'Lessons with Ed Parker.'  It's available through www.leewedlake.com.  Great book!
